Link from the auld bbc – Seven shortlisted designs for the Ross Bandstand in Princes Street gardens. We all know this wee place needs some TLC, some of the designs are just a tad horrendous. But I do like the Flanagan Lawrence design
It is hoped a new pavilion to replace Edinburgh’s Ross bandstand will revitalise West Princes Street Gardens.
The Flodden wall – medieval Edinburgh’s main defensive wall. Enclosing the southern part of the city, through what is today the Grassmarket, Cowgate and Greyfriars, the northern section of the city was defended by the Nor Loch and nobody wanted to dip in to that, it was disgusting.
The newly crowned king of England was up to their usual rhetoric claiming to be overlord of Scotland, then in 1513 Henry VIII of England invaded France, James IV of Scotland reenacted the Auld Alliance and invaded England, Unfortunately this was a mistake and the Scottish army was massacred. James was also killed thus being the last Scottish monarch to die on the battlefield.
This wall was built in fear of an English reprisal, but it’s also the main reason why there are so many closes in Edinburgh’s old town – Build buildings close together, build them high as space was premium. (gardyloo & haud yer hun – but thats another story)
you can still see Surviving fragments throughout the city, as with its expansion the Teller wall
Here, I present to you a panoramic photo of Calton Hill – Panoramic
Calton Hill – Panoramic
This is one of two, the other will be updated at a later date.
here we can see The National Monument of Scotland, this is Scotland’s national memorial to the Scottish soldiers and sailors who died fighting in the Napoleonic Wars. Next is Nelson Monument this is a commemorative tower in honour of Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson. lastley we have the Old City Observatory no longer in use.
The Below link and image taken from STV news. Architects have submitted a planning application for a new five star hotel, they call it a ‘ribbon hotel’. In my opinion, its a horrendous piece of monstrosity. Not only doesn’t it fit in with the city, it will ruin the sky line from practically everywhere. It also looks like something else, something a wee bitty rude 😉
Images have been revealed showing how the proposed ‘ribbon hotel’ would look from around the city.
