Heart Of Midlothian

Edinburgh! the Royal Mile – or the high street if you wish.
you may notice this mosaic patterns outside St. Giles Cathedral, – The Heart Of Midlothian. This marked the entrance of a 15th century Toll booth,  (demolished ~1817). The administrative center of the town, where proclamations were read aloud, taxes collected and the codenamed executed. a very frightening place indeed.

The building also features in Sir Walter Scott’s novel, The Heart of Midlothian, published in 1818.
and the name of one of Edinburgh’s Football Teams.

you may also see people spit at the center, this could be interpreted as a  sign of disdain to the goverment, the taxes collected, or the people executed, it really depends on whom one asks.

Forth Bridge – Now a Unesco World Heritage Site

The Forth Bridge has become the sixth Scottish landmark to be awarded Unesco World Heritage Site status.

The decision was announced at a meeting in the German city of Bonn after the UN’s cultural committee spent more than a year considering its nomination.

World heritage status is given to sites of “outstanding universal value” with the aim of protecting them for future generations.

The distinctive red bridge has carried trains over the Forth since 1890.

It is almost exactly a kilometre long, west to east, from Duddingston road to Baileyfield Road, following the line of the Figgate Burn. It’s a lovely wee place full of wonderful wildlife. including Swans and their Cygnets

Bum The Dog

We all know about Edinburgh’s favorite canine the one, the only – Greyfriars bobby
but he has a unofficial brother, I present to you, Bum.  Bum is from San Diego in California.  Edinburgh was twinned with San Diego in 1977, so why not brother up out much loved historic dogs.  Two beautiful animals that share such a unique different history.

A Canine Connection

Edinburgh and San Diego, California, share a twinning link with a
unique twist.  Each city is home to a famous dog. Edinburgh’s loyal and
beloved Greyfriars Bobby and San Diego’s equally beloved vagabond dog,
bum.  In recognition of these canine heroes a statue of Bobby was
presented to San Diego and this statue of Bum was gifted in return.
The dogs represent the spirit of a twinning link friendship,
loyalty and shared experience.

Bum, died 1898, Aged 12 years
sculpted by Jessica McCain, USA

Presented to the citizens of Edinburgh by the San Diego-Edinburgh sister Society

Safety first, obviously you cant look directly at the sun, so improvisation was done…. rip apart a old Floppy disk, and use that as a filter. now, you could only look for a second, the bright light messed up the sensors, somewhat difficult to shoot.

Taken with an iPhone, so not the best, but heyho!   the red filter, adds some atmosphere to the photos
