Games Exhibition to come to National Museum in December

From the Edinburgh Evening News July 2nd 2014 – Link

CLASSIC video game characters Pac Man, Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Mario and the Angry Birds are set to descend on the National Museum of Scotland later this year in an exhibition that will see the venue transformed into a giant arcade.

The Game Masters exhibition will feature over 100 playable games covering a period which has seen video games evolve from a niche interest to a massively popular leisure activity, international cultural art form and a global commercial entertainment industry.

And as well as playing the games, visitors will discover more about game design and development through rare original game artwork, 2D objects and interviews with game designers.

Good to see this back, I remember this was here way back in 2002 as ‘Game-On’

The semi circle is the Edinburgh Castle Half Moon Battery, built 1573 – 1588
This impressive part of the castle is an artillery fortification,  built after the Lang (long) siege of 1571-1573.   Built to protect the Royal Palace from bombardment, the half moon battery sits on the ruins of David’s tower, the residence of King David II – son of Robert the Bruce

What! Gin not Whisky?

whoda thunkd it!

I always thought whisky would be more popular, apparently not

IF THEY produced a food and drink version of Trivial Pursuit, this would make a great question, writes Stephen Jardine.

Which European city consumes the most gin per head of the population?

You might assume it would be cocktail-mad London or thirsty Barcelona but the answer is Edinburgh. That may seem surprising until you understand the city’s rich gin heritage.

Back in 1777 there were eight licensed distilleries and almost 400 illegal stills operating in Edinburgh and Leith. Edinburgh was a centre for gin excellence as well as consumption.

George Street to be revamped

Link from BBC 13th July 2014 – Full Article Linky

The first phase of a project aiming to improve George Street for pedestrians and cyclists will begin next week.

Work, which will last about four weeks, will begin on Monday and will make way for an increase in pedestrian space on each of the street’s four blocks.

Changes are set to come into full effect after the Edinburgh Festival.

The works will also result in the introduction of a dedicated two-way cycle lane and a one-way system for general traffic and buses.

Preparations for the scheme will be phased along the length of the street from west to east, with the north side of the street being closed from Charlotte Square to Frederick Street and the south side closed between Frederick Street and St Andrew Square.

I’m sure this will be a unmitigated success, just like the the tram works 😉

There’s Been A Murder (Hoax)

Brilliant what you can find on Google Street view, especial if you spot the street view car and have a wee bit time to play a prank.   A couple of quickening mechanics mechanics in Giles street (Leith) staged a homicide.  Apparently this was taken last summer, but police Scotland recently tuned up to investigate
